Abstract

Annette Vowinckel

In June/July 1976, an Air France plane was hijacked to Entebbe (Uganda); the German and Palestinian hijackers separated Jewish from non-Jewish passengers and kept only the Jews as hostages. The article outlines the significance of the series of highly publi-cized hijackings occurring between 1968 and 1977 in the context of the development of international terrorism. The analysis demonstrates that the response of the German left to the Israeli-Arab conflict revealed a high degree of ambivalence regarding both the Jewish state and the National Socialist past. Under the cover of anti-imperialism, the perspective of the “sixty-eighters” who claimed to be “historically aware” sometimes verged on open antisemitism.
