Am Beispiel des Russischen Bürgerkriegs untersucht der Aufsatz kollektive Gewalthandlungen in staatsfernen Räumen. Gewalt war dort nicht nur Mittel zum Zweck, sondern auch sinnstiftendes Medium. Die Aufzeichnungen des ehemaligen zarischen Offiziers Govoruchin bieten ungewöhnlich detaillierte Einblicke in die Geschehnisse in der ukrainischen Kleinstadt Gajsin. Bei mehreren Pogromwellen des Jahres 1919 ermordete die Truppe des Atamanen (Warlords) Volynec fast die gesamte jüdische Bevölkerung des Ortes. Antisemitismus war dafür nur ein Faktor neben anderen - die neuartige Pogromgewalt hatte vor allem Sinn und Bedeutung für die Kämpfergemeinschaft selbst, die eine Kultur der Gewalt ausbildete. Gewalthandlungen können als Kommunikationsformen verstanden werden, die Gemeinschaft, Autorität und Identität konstituieren. In der historischen Situation des Russischen Bürgerkriegs reproduzierte sich die Gewalt selbst und tendierte zur Entgrenzung. Der 25-jährige Volynec verdankte seine Führungsrolle einem gewissen Organisationsgeschick, vor allem aber einer schrankenlosen Gewaltbereitschaft.

This article examines acts of collective violence in non-state spaces. Violence is not only a means to achieve certain ends, but also a medium of cultural meaning. The memoirs of the former tsarist officer Govoruchin offer insight into the events that took place in the little Ukrainian town of Gajsin during the Russian civil war. In a series of pogroms the troops of the ataman (warlord) Volynec almost completely annihilated the Jewish population of Gajsin. Antisemitism, however, was only one motivation for this mass killing, for the violence itself also lent meaning to the soldiers’ sense of community, allowing a culture of violence to evolve within a non-state space. Violent actions can be interpreted as forms of communication which produce group cohesion, authority and identity. In the context of the Russian civil war, violence was therefore self-perpetuating and tended towards excess - a process in which the twenty-five-year old Volynec played a leading role on account of his organisational skills and his tendency to indulge in unrestrained violence.
