Jürgen Thorwalds „Die große Flucht“, erstmals 1949/50 in zwei Bänden erschienen und zuletzt 2005 wieder aufgelegt, ist eines der verbreitetsten Werke über das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs im Osten sowie Flucht und Vertreibung der deutschen Bevölkerung. In den 1950er-Jahren gehörte Konrad Adenauer zu den Lesern, und bis heute argumentiert Erika Steinbach mit Elementen aus Thorwalds Darstellung. Sehr früh hatte Thorwald (Pseudonym für Heinz Bongartz) exklusiven Zugriff auf eine Fülle von Dokumenten und Zeitzeugenberichten. Sein Erfolg lässt sich jedoch eher mit der besonderen Darstellungsweise erklären, die sich zugleich sachlich und emotional gibt. Historiographischer Anspruch und literarische Verdichtung sind in dem Werk eng verbunden. Ästhetisch knüpfte Thorwald an den Kriegsbericht an, zu dem er als Autor journalistischer Artikel und Bücher über Luftwaffe und Marine vor 1945 selbst beigetragen hatte. Gleichzeitig bilden Thorwalds Bücher spezifische diskursive Formationen der Nachkriegszeit ab.

Jürgen Thorwald’s ‘The Great Flight’ (Die große Flucht), which appeared for the first time in two volumes in 1949/50 and was recently republished in 2005, is one of the most widely available works about the end of the Second World War in the east and about the flight and expulsion of the German population. Konrad Adenauer was among its readers during the 1950s, and to this day Erika Steinbach draws on elements of Thorwald’s work in her arguments. At a very early date, Thorwald (the pseudonym of Heinz Bongartz) had exclusive access to a whole range of documents and eyewitness accounts. However, his success can more readily be ascribed to the particular manner in which he presents his material, which is both factual and emotional at the same time. Historiographical qualities and a concise literary style go hand in hand in his work. In aesthetic terms, Thorwald drew on the genre of the war report, to which he contributed as an author of journalistic articles and books about the German air force and navy before 1945. At the same time, Thorwald’s books represent specific discursive formations characteristic of the postwar years.
