Abstract

Nepomuk Gasteiger

The question of the social effects of mass consumption played a crucial role for market research, marketing, criticism of consumerism, consumer protection and consumer policy in the Federal Republic of Germany. This article deals with the 1960s and 1970s. The popular assumption of the 1950s that mass consumption led to the leveling of social hierarchies became less important. Market researchers, marketing experts and consumerists developed a new model of society structured by the symbolic dimension of consumer goods. The article explores the assumptions underlying social leveling and distinction as time-dependent propositions and relates them to the historical practices of market research, marketing, criticism of consumerism and consumer protection. The 1970s marked the climax of this debate about consumption and society. Fierce criti-cism of consumerism plunged the advertising industry into a crisis, while consumer protection achieved a breakthrough.
