Europäische Zeitgeschichte beruht auf unterschiedlichen Meisterzählungen, zu denen sie in einem Wechselverhältnis steht. Sie sollte von einem geografischen Begriff von Europa ausgehen, der den Westen wie den Osten gleichermaßen umgreift und keine vorgegebenen „europäischen Werte“ annimmt. Quellenzugang, Fragestellungen und regionaler Forschungsstand variieren beträchtlich. Während die wirtschafts- und politikhistorische Integrationsforschung zu Westeuropa institutionalisiert ist und abgesicherte Ergebnisse aufweist, fehlt dies für die osteuropäische Integration noch weitgehend. In dem Aufsatz werden darüber hinaus unterschiedliche Sektoren einer vergleichenden europäischen Geschichte benannt. Hier zeichnen sich neue Wege ab, die zum Teil auch gesamteuropäische Ansätze verfolgen. Durch den Pluralismus von Integrations- und vergleichender Geschichte könnten eindimensionale Meistererzählungen differenziert werden.

Contemporary European history starts from different master narratives. Historical research and master narratives form a mutually interdependent relationship. Contemporary European history can best be approached from a notion of Europe which comprises the East as well as the West and not from common values. In this framework the resort to sources and analytical questions still vary considerably. While research on the economic and political integration history of Western Europe is institutionalized and provides accepted results, there is only scant knowledge of the integration process of Central and Eastern European countries. The article discusses different approaches to Contemporary European History. New approaches in these fields partially fulfil the aim of offering perspectives pertaining to the whole of Europe. In utilizing pluralistic interpretations of the history of integration in conjunction with comparative history, one-dimensional master narratives may be differentiated and modified in the long run.
