Der Bau der neuen UNESCO-Gebäude in Paris war in den 1950er-Jahren von Konflikten begleitet, die auf die schwierige Genese einer neuen internationalen Ordnung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verweisen. Der Aufsatz knüpft an jüngere Forschungen zur internationalen Geschichte sowie zu internationalen Organisationen an. Im Hinblick auf die UNESCO interessieren erstens die Etappen der Auseinandersetzung und zweitens die Bauten selbst. Drittens geht es um Gebrauchsweisen und Lesarten des Gebäudeensembles. Die Analyse beruht auf der These, dass die durch die Architektur geschaffene räumliche Ordnung und die verwendeten Materialien als bedeutungstragend zu verstehen sind. Allerdings deckte sich das realisierte Gebäude nicht völlig mit den Programmen und Wunschvorstellungen seiner Initiatoren. Die zeitgenössischen Kritiken sowie heutige Analysen geben den Blick frei auf nicht weiter explizierte Annahmen und Hierarchien, die die Organisation als politische und soziale Ordnung in den 1950er-Jahren prägten – und sie möglicherweise nach wie vor bestimmen.

The article takes up the case of the construction of the new UNESCO buildings in Paris in the 1950s. Drawing on new research in international history and the emerging field of the history of international organisations, it first looks at the different stages of this conflict and then at the buildings themselves; finally, the article deals with the uses and interpretations of the building ensemble. The author argues that the architecture as well as the construction materials created a meaningful spatial order. However, in the end the constructions did not entirely correspond with the programmatic ideals of those who initiated them. The criticism at the time as well as more recent analysis clearly point towards some of the underlying, implicit assumptions and hierarchies that significantly shaped the organisation’s political and social order in the 1950s – and perhaps even continue to do so.
